SUBLIMATION OF TRAUMA IN KURT VONNEGUT'S POSTMODERN NARRATIVE: A PSYCHOANALYTIC PERSPECTIVE ON THE PERCEPTION OF TIME IN SLAUGHTERHOUSE-FIVE

Abstract. The article examines Kurt Vonnegut's novel «Slaughterhouse-Five» from the standpoint of psychoanalytic theory, in particular, the mechanism of sublimation of traumatic experience. The non-linear temporal structure of the novel is analyzed as a way of coping with post-traumatic stress. The connection between the trauma of the Dresden bombing and Vonnegut's artistic method, including the use of fragmentation, omissions, and the Tralfamadorian concept of time, is explored. It is concluded that the novel represents a sublimation of the author's personal trauma and at the same time a critique of violence and militarism.
